What is a Mental Health Check-up? And… Do I Need One?!

Are you getting your mental health advice from AI, Tik Tok, or Dr. Google? At the Bradley Counseling Center, we believe that it is always a good idea to talk with a professional when you have question about your mental health. That is why we now offer annual “Mental Health Checkups” with our trained therapists to screen for mental health diagnoses and make recommendations if needed.

Did You Know?

A law went into effect on January 1st, 2025, that requires all insurance companies to cover an annual mental health screening, the same way that they must cover a physical every year. If you have questioned whether you need therapy or are unsure if your coping strategies are “normal” or “healthy,” this type of appointment may be for you! You can learn about your own mental health, when to seek out help, and what type of help may be beneficial.

Mental Health Is Health!

Just as you would go to a medical primary care physician for physicals, it is important to seek a mental health professional when determining if any mental health interventions are needed. Our goal in offering this service is to help you determine whether there is any need for interventions or not. Our therapist will discuss your life, stressors, coping strategies, and any family history of mental illness to provide recommendations that may vary from new coping strategies to try, seeking therapy, referral to a psychiatrist or testing, what warning signs to look for in order to seek out help, or helping you connect with a hospital if you are in crisis.

“In this day and age, a lot of people turn to technology for advice on mental health. However, it can often be misleading or tell you what you want to hear, leading to potential harm. Trained therapists/psychologists offer more than what you want to hear – they offer connection, understanding, and expertise – the same way a medical doctor does for physical health,” explains Dr. Sandra Clavelli, Senior Director of Clinical and Outpatient Services at Allendale.

It’s okay to ask for help. Our therapists offer a broad range of experience to help you address many of life’s challenges. We also offer some services in Spanish. If you or a family member need help determining if you need further interventions, please reach out to our Bradley Counseling Center at 847-356-3322 to answer some brief intake questions and make an appointment.
